WATCH: Hundreds tour new high school ahead of October opening

The new Anderson High School and Hall of Residence may not be finished yet, but that did not stop their doors being thrown open to around 200 visitors yesterday.

Members of the public were given the chance to enjoy a sneak preview of Shetland Islands Council’s flagship construction project, with tours of both buildings held throughout the day.

Pupils are due to be entering the new school in October.

Morrison Construction’s project director for the development, Mark Clarke, says the project is one close to those who are involved in its development.

“Overall today there are going to be approximately 200 visitors, so there is quite a level of interest in the project.

“The school and the halls of residence are something that I think we have all got very close to as we were building them.

“They are clearly a very important part of island life … and we are embracing that.”

He said he was looking forward to the completion and wanted everyone to be “excited” by what the new school had to offer.

The AHS project has endured many false dawns, but it has gathered pace since construction of the new four-storey building and accommodation hall began in 2015.

Among the visitors to the new site were Lerwick couple Andrew and Marina Massie.

Mr Massie described the school as “splendid”, adding the rooms in the Hall of Residence were “a lot bigger than I would have expected.”

Mrs Massie added: “I think it will be a lot brighter. It would be nice to come back and see the finished article.”

Good God! As if it wasn’t horrendous enough looking from the outside…..

It will not make diferance to what the building or School looks like, Be it a tin hut or a Palace, what ever it look likes inside and outside,will not make a odds it all comes down to how these highly paid teachers deal with the kids Education

Looks a bit like an old prison layout. Only thing missing is the ant-suicide mesh.

As long as standards in the shetland education remain high it doesnt matter what the building looks like.
