About

Our mission: shetlandtimes.co.uk is a “community orientated” site for Shetland residents, exiles and visitors. Published by The Shetland Times Ltd, shetlandtimes.co.uk is the default choice for news and information on Shetland. Our first site went “live” in March 1996 – the first weekly newspaper in Scotland to go online – and has been constantly expanded and improved.

The Shetland Times Ltd is Shetland’s leading communications organisation. Founded in 1872 the company publishes the islands’ popular weekly newspaper The Shetland Times (with a circulation figure of 11,438, boasting circulation to all local households), and is the main publisher of books of local interest with around 75 titles in its current list. Other activities encompass bookselling (both through our retail bookshop and web site), colour and commercial printing, digital imaging and printing, developing commercial web-sites, and internet services including news, information and promotional activities.

The company has 55 employees, is wholly locally owned and has been in the same family for four generations. We have two sites in Lerwick, the “capital” of Shetland: Head office, newspaper offices and Shetland Litho printing works and pre-press department at Gremista and our Bookshop at 71/79 Commercial Street.

Our Gremista factory is a purpose built facility incorporating the latest pre-press technology including flat-bed and hi-resolution drum scanning for newspaper, web and high quality colour images for four colour process printing. Output devices range from laser printers, through digital colour printers to laser imaging device for outputting printing plates for conventional web and sheet-fed offset litho printing.

During 2006 a £850,000 investment saw the installation of a computer to plate system and a five unit B3 Komori press LS 529 – all “state of the art” technology.
