Plans for a major development of 21 houses in Scalloway were once again recommended for refusal by the council’s planning board today.

Lucky escape for builder after crane topples over at North Ness site

A man working on the social work construction site at North Ness was injured on Thursday when the crane he was operating toppled over. He was taken by ambulance to the Gilbert Bain Hospital with suspected broken ribs. A hospital spokeswoman said his condition was “stable”.

Whitefish industry on brink of collapse due to EU restrictions

A significant proportion of the Scottish whitefish fleet is facing financial collapse unless there is an easing of the current management restrictions.

Safety needs could lead to Peerie Dock being filled in, harbour board hears

The historic Peerie Dock at Symbister in Whalsay could be filled in on safety grounds, a meeting of the SIC harbour board heard on Wednesday. The dock is crumbling and collapsing and is now deemed to be in such a dangerous state of repair that part of it has been fenced off to prohibit public access to the worst affected areas.

Rocks is off down under as part of Scottish fencing team for Commonwealth event

Shetland fencer Christopher Rocks has been selected for the Commonwealth Fencing Open Championships.

He will be part of the Scotland squad for the event, sanctioned by but independent of the Commonwealth Games. Although the games will be held in Delhi, India, the fencing championships will take place separately in Melbourne, Australia.
