Bobsleigh team to visit backers

ONE of the GB bobsleigh teams arrives in Shetland on Sunday to complete their preparations for what will be a very busy and exciting winter racing season in Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

Kenny Simm and team mate Chris Wooley are competing in all two-man bobsleigh events in Europe starting with the British Championships. Kenny is pilot of the bobsleigh and Chris is the brake man.

This season will be Kenny’s and Chris’s second racing season and already they have shown in testing that they are strong and fast and will threaten all the two-man teams in the British Championships.…

Pony show success story

ARIANE, Kira and Rebecca Fraser returned recently from competing at the Blue Chip Scottish Winter Festival of Champions at the Scottish National Equestrian Centre in West Lothian.

The girls, aged 12, 11 and seven respectively, qualified their ponies at the North East of Scotland Horse Show in July and made the journey to take part last Friday. Rebecca was first in the ring in the Lead Rein Championship at 8am, with HRE Aladdin, and despite being a bit sleepy was placed first and received the sash as champion. Kinetics set fast pace in netball league as struggling Supernova fail to shine

KINETICS and Whalsay were the victors in Division One while in Division Two Challengers clocked up a trio of wins. Scalloway Juniors and Ness won their matches in Division Three.

The starting line ups for both teams were a bit different to previous weeks. Kinetics set the pace of the game with some fast attacking play and accurate shooting from Sarah Grogan and Kirsti Leask. Netball team conquer Orkney

A SHETLAND select netball team beat their old rivals and came fourth overall in a tournament in Orkney at the weekend.

A total of nine teams from all over Scotland entered, playing 20-minute games at the Pickaquoy Centre.

The Shetland squad consisted of Marie Clark, Fiona Dally (captain), Christine Jamieson, Louise Kelly, Dawn Manson, Louise Moar, Eileen Robertson, Ava Sim and Maree Simpson.

The Shetland team were slow to get going, losing out narrowly to Aberdeen team Westhill 14-16 – a disappointing start especially when they were leading by four goals with three minutes remaining. Shetland v Dumfries saw a …

Thompson is top pool man

THIS year’s Shetland Freezer Foods Trophy pool competition was played recently. The last eight players were Kenneth Henry who lost 1-5 to Brian Thompson; Sandy Henry who beat John Magnus Jeromson 5-3; George Fraser who lost 3-5 against Stephen Cutt; and Ryan Duncan who lost 3-5 to son Steve Duncan.

Brian Thompson went on to defeat Sandy Henry 5-1 and Steve Duncan beat Stephen Cutt by the same score.

The final went frame for frame but at four frames each Brian edged ahead in the ninth and after some nervous and edgy play also won the tenth to win 6-4.…

Volleyball hat night declared a success

WITH no league matches, a volleyball hat night was held last Friday and attracted 29 people, including eight new starters.

Good turnout for first climbing contest

ON TUESDAY night 21 climbers turned out at Clickimin for the first ever indoor climbing competition run by Climb Shetland. Climbers of all ages and abilities took part in teams of three to face the challenges that had been set out for them. After a warm-up traverse it was on to the main climbing event.

Each team was given 10 minutes to climb on each section of the wall, taking it in turn to climb the routes. The rules were simple: you were not allowed to climb the same route twice in your team, and each climber could only attempt …

Probation for ‘arrogant’ boatman

TAKING a boat out across the busy Bressay Sound at night without any lights to guide him or warn other vessels of his presence earned an “arrogant” Lerwick man a 12-month probation order when he appeared at the town’s sheriff court.

Craig Sandison, 21, of Cheyne Crescent, was also ordered to carry out 120 hours of community service when he stood before sheriff James Hendry on Wednesday.

Sandison had previously admitted piloting an inflatable boat between Bressay Pier and Victoria Pier on 22 August with 61 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeding the legal limit of 35 …

Man escapes prison sentence for breaching order

A MAN who breached his supervised attendance order escaped a prison sentence when he appeared at Lerwick Sheriff Court.

Shaun Chapman, 40, of Old School, Whiteness, was previously handed 100 hours for possessing heroin on 13th July last year at Ladies Drive and stealing a pair of boots from Highland Industrial Supplies in Inverness on 3rd August 2005.

Appearing before Sheriff James Hendry on Wednesday, Chapman was warned he would be given a custodial sentence if he failed to complete the orders again.

Councillors denied corporate credit cards

SIC COUNCILLORS are unlikely to get their own corporate credit cards despite the obvious temptations.

Councillor Gussie Angus floated the idea on Wednesday at the Full Council meeting. He said councillors and senior officials in other places were issued with the cards for the expenses incurred on duty and he thought perhaps they should be looked at for the SIC.

Finance chief Graham Johnston admitted he had not thought about extending SIC corporate cards to members but was happy to look at it.
