Young bowlers benefit from trip

EIGHT junior bowlers travelled south recently to compete against juniors from Aberdeen Indoor Bowling Club.

The trip proved very successful and overall the Shetland team won by a margin of two points.

The team consisted of one pair and two triples. Liam Evans (captain and skip) and Adam Wood played in a pairs competition and Jenny Watt (skip), Jenny Blackburn and Sarah Irvine competed in a triple competition with Jak Kissisck (skip), Fraser Mckenzie and Connal Thomason competing in the final triple.

The team also benefited by receiving a training session from the Aberdeen coaches.

Shetland football boss resigns

SHETLAND football team manager John Johnson has resigned in the same week that it was confirmed the team would be travelling to next year’s Island Games in Åland.

Johnson, who had been in the post since October 2006, is stepping down because of work commitments which meant he would not be able to commit the time to preparing the squad for the 2009 season.

It was agreed at a team meeting on Monday evening that Shetland would send a side to compete in the Island Games, but Johnson indicated that he would be unable to commit to training the team …

CLAN breaks through £50,000 barrier

THE SHETLAND CLAN 1,2,3 appeal has just broken the £50,000 barrier.

The appeal for a new cancer centre in Aberdeen was launched at the end of July and has seen widespread support across Shetland from both individuals and groups.

Donations have been made directly to the appeal as well as a whole range of fund-raising events including sports, discos, dog trails, bag packing, flower shows and snowball teas.

Appeal chairwoman Elaine Jamieson said the Shetland community was responding to what was a very worthwhile cause and dear to the hearts of many in the isles.

Man who embezzled public purse escapes jail

A FORMER Shetland Enterprise manager who embezzled £14,778 of public funds from his employer avoided jail this week because a family member is paying back the cash.

Steven Leask, 32, of Uphouse, Aith, took the money from Highlands and Islands Enterprise between February and May last year when he was an area operations manager.

Appearing for sentencing at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday, Leask was smartly dressed in a suit with a bag packed ready for a possible trip to prison in Aberdeen.

Woman stopped drink driver in Tesco car park

A BRAVE woman shopper stood in front of a car in the Tesco car park to stop a drink-driver as he tried to leave with his box of wine.

The culprit, Hamish Nicol, 55, of Lower Sound, Lerwick, was arrested and on Wednesday admitted his guilt, landing a £1,200 fine and two-year driving ban. He had a breath/alcohol count of 125 which is over three-and-a-half times the permitted amount of 35.

Curfew for BB pistol shooter

A TEENAGER who fired a BB air pistol at people from a moving car was branded a dangerous person by a sheriff on Wednesday as he was placed on a seven-night-a-week curfew for six months.

Unemployed Scott Leask, 18, of Ladies Drive, Lerwick, just missed a two-year-old child in a pram on Commercial Road during his shooting antics in town on 30th June as well as targeting friends and signs at the Esplanade.

Loganair bows to pressure over luggage limits

LOGANAIR has abandoned plans to introduce a 15kg weight limit for baggage on flights when Flybe takes over the franchise for flights between Sumburgh and the UK mainland.

The new operator initially said it would impose the restriction when it takes over the service later this month, but following local concerns highlighted in The Shetland Times last week it has decided to begin with a 20kg limit for a trial period, just under the 23kg allowed by British Airways.

Road accidents cost £4m – but fewer people are killed

ROAD accidents cost Shetland around £4 million in 2006, it emerged at Tuesday’s meeting of the infrastructure committee. A total of 12 people were killed or seriously injured in that year and 49 were slightly injured – a vast improvement on the previous year.

The figure is an estimate of the cost of damage to vehicles and property, police time, insurance administration, loss of earnings and human misery.

The casualty figures are contained in a report prepared by the Road Safety Advisory Panel, which aims to meet government targets for cutting the number of deaths on the roads substantially by …

MP back on Lib Dem frontbench

ISLES MP Alistair Carmichael has rejoined the Liberal Democrat frontbench as shadow secretary of state for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

He resigned seven months ago after defying the party whip to vote in favour of a referendum on the controversial European Treaty of Lisbon.

His appointment to the dual role comes despite Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s decision last week to restore the role of Scottish secretary, which had been held jointly by Des Browne with defence, to a single Cabinet post. Jim Murphy is the new incumbent.

Anger over school speed limit signs

THE INSTALLATION of 20mph signs near all schools should be speeded up, councillors agreed at a meeting of the infrastructure committee on Tuesday.

Head of roads Ian Halcrow said the installation was a priority and the council was a third of the way through the work now. He said the job was moving along as the budget allowed and it would be completed within three years.
