Whalsay finish season with a victory

THE SENIOR football season was completed last weekend with Whalsay winning 4-1 at home against Unst in the sole remaining fixture in the G&S Flooring Premier League.

Meanwhile Shetland Football Association held its end-of-season awards evening at The Shetland Hotel on Saturday where the guest speaker was comedian and Albion Rovers director Patrick Rolink. Football bashes traditionally favour the risque stuff and Rolink certainly appeared to fit the bill. According to one source he was about “10 times bluer” than Chubby Brown.

The senior Shetland player of the year, voted for by club representatives, was Ross Moncrieff of Celtic. The …

Rugby team goes down again

Shetland 0, Deeside 15

THE SHETLAND rugby team played their second home match in the league against Deeside last Saturday at Clickimin.

So far this season preparations have not been ideal, but there was a good turnout for the squad, with some having to be content to spectate for much of the game.

Despite the numbers the lack of experienced players was apparent quite early, with Deeside going over for the first of two soft tries from a tighthead at an early scrum, which became a regular feature of the match.

Shetland began to settle a bit and put some …

WITH the season soon drawing to a close, golfers at Dale have been making the best of the late summer weather with the course still in excellent condition.

The final open competition of the year took place last Saturday with Ernie Smith lifting the LEF Shield after a play-off.

The conclusion of the summer league also needed a play-off after Ronnie Birnie and Chris Conboy tied on 20 points over the season. They still couldn’t be separated after 18 holes but it was Birnie who eventually triumphed when he birdied the third play-off hole.

Great Work as Ross lands Double Rise clay trophy

THE ANNUAL Double Rise Trophy clay shoot held last Sunday produced the highest scores seen in the 19 years the event has been held.

Double Rise is two targets thrown simultaneously to a fixed height and angle at Down the Line (DTL) speed. The wind on the day was fairly strong from behind resulting in the targets having to be set a little faster to prevent them diving too quickly. The targets were viewed by the eight who entered the competition prior to starting and appeared difficult.

The competition was shot over one round of 25 pairs in two squads …
