Delting and Spurs will meet in the final of the Madrid Cup, senior football’s oldest trophy, after winning their respective semi-finals on Friday. Delting by all accounts were rather fortunate to defeat Celtic in extra time, while Spurs, seemingly raising their game in the absence of suspended county players James Johnston and Josie Kay, created a shock by travelling to Whalsay and winning.

Delting secured the last place in senior football’s Madrid Cup semi-finals after a 6-1 win over rivals for second place in group two Whitedale and a 2-0 win over Ness United in the final group game on Monday. Friday night’s semi-final ties see Celtic at home to Delting and Whalsay take on Spurs at Symbister.

Celtic and Spurs claimed first and second spots respectively in senior football’s Madrid Cup group one, the second match between the two ending all square, while Scalloway emerged victorious from a high-scoring encounter with Thistle. In group two Whalsay have already qualified for the semi-finals, while Delting can pip Whitedale for second place if they win their remaining two games.

Celtic continue to dominate group one of senior football’s Madrid Cup with two more victories over Scalloway and Thistle, while Spurs look most likely to join them in the semi-finals. In group two Whalsay have set the pace, with both Whitedale and Delting also in with a chance of making it to the last four.

Celtic had two good wins in group one of Shetland Football Association’s Madrid Cup double league and Scalloway recovered from a drubbing by Spurs to defeat Thistle on Monday. In group two it was a good week for Whitedale with wins over Whalsay and Ness United while Delting and Whalsay shared the spoils in their match.

The Shetland women’s football team’s participation in the Unite Scottish Cup came to an end at the weekend when they went down 4-1 to Raith Rovers in the second round, two late goals putting an unfair complexion on the scoreline.

The Shetland Football Association’s fixture card was well and truly decimated this week with only Monday’s fixtures in the Madrid Cup going ahead. Friday’s Madrid Cup games all fell foul of the weather with the exception of the the Group 2 game between Whalsay and Delting which was awarded as a win to the home team as Delting were unable to field a team.
