Shetland Island Games Association (SIGA) is to send a letter to every member of the football squad expressing disappointment at the “inappropriate” behaviour and excessive drinking of some of the players during the Island Games competition in Åland last weekend, which led to one player spending a night in the cells.

From Neil Riddell in Åland It has been a patchy week in terms of medal successes for Shetland’s youthful team of 94 athletes and competitors at the 13th NatWest Island Games in Åland, with the good form of the archers the un­doubted high point as they collected the fourth and final of their medals yesterday.

Medal number seven for Team Shetland in this year’s Island Games arrived in the pool on Thursday evening thanks to a sterling swim from young Amy Harper in the 100m freestyle.

Shetland’s archers won their fourth medal of the week on Thursday morning to take the team’s overall tally in this year’s Island Games to six.

Wednesday was a slightly disappointing day for Shetland’s Island Games team in Åland, with one of the main medal hopes for the day, Andrea Strachan, missing out on one of her favoured events because of illness and the archers unable to repeat their heroics of 24 hours earlier.

There was joy of the sweetest kind for archer Billy Finnie as he won gold in the single men’s compound event at the Island Games in Åland on Tuesday afternoon, while team mate Sara Leith picked up a bronze in the corresponding women’s event, helping to secure a team bronze medal as well to more than double Team Shetland’s medal tally to date.

Shetland’s footballers went down to a humiliating 3-1 defeat against Greenland on Tuesday afternoon at the Island Games in Åland. Leighton Flaws scored the only goal for the isles side against a team that had until then been the whipping boys of Group A, shipping 10 goals in their first two matches.

Shetland’s footballers’ hopes of medal glory at the 2009 Island Games came to an end at Hammarvallen on Monday evening when despite a battling performance they slipped to a 2-1 defeat to the host island Åland.

Shetland’s second bronze medal on Monday arrived thanks to swimmer Andrea Strachan, who finished third in the 50m breaststroke, adding to the medal won by the isles’ shooters in the team skeet event earlier in the day.
