SWIMMING

THE SWIMMING produced some fantastic results with five inter county records being broken.

The first event, the 100m freestyle, saw the two Shetland girls powering away, Amy Harper winning in a new county and Shetland record time of 59.39, making her the first Shetland girl to ever swim under the minute. Andrea Strachan took second place.

The boys also took the first two places, Tom Raikes swimming 54.53, a new Shetland record time. Callum MacGregor was second in a new PB.

The 50m backstroke saw Amy accompanied by Lynne Strachan. Despite just having swum the freestyle, Amy
again came first, breaking her second county and Shetland record in 32.29. Morna Brown of Orkney came second with Lynne third.

In the boys’ event Felix Gifford was just touched out by Orkney’s overall captain Jim Cook. Felix broke the 13/14 age group Shetland record on his way to second place in 31.36. Zai Vessey was third in a new PB.

The girls’ 50m breaststroke saw Andrea Strachan in action for the second time. Giving a great demonstration of breaststroke sprinting she won in a new inter county and Shetland record of 33.93. Nicole Petursdottir swam well to snatch second place from the Orkney girls.

In the boys’ 50m breaststroke the Orkney boys proved too strong with Bryce Sutherland winning and Shaun Raeburn coming second. Craig Nicolson was third in a new 13/14 Shetland record 35.49 while Callum MacGregor came fourth.

The final individual event, the 50m butterfly, saw Nicole joined by Shetland’s youngest swimmer Megan Nicolson, 11. Both girls gave it their all and Nicole just touched out Megan for the win. Megan’s second
place was a great achievement considering her age.

In the boys’ butterfly Tom and Felix were in action for the second time. Tom dominated the race, touching first in a new inter county record of 27.66. Felix was left battling with Jim Cook and once again was touched out by the older swimmer.

The two freestyle relays saw both the girls and boys going for the records.

The girls’ team of Amy, Lynne, Nicole and Andrea again dominated and broke the inter county record in 1.56.00.

The boys’ team of Callum, Craig, Felix and Tom just missed the record by eight one hundredths of a second on their way to winning.

After some fantastic swimming from both teams the final score was Shetland 58, Orkney 36.
