Lynsey powers to victory

SHETLAND Triathlon Club were in Whalsay on Sunday to hold a planned triathlon. However the weather made it unsafe for the cycle part of the event to take place. So in its place an aquathon was arranged, an event involving a swim with a run straight after it.

Ten competitors entered the race and from the start favourite Lynsey Henderson dominated the swim and was out on the run first, followed by Shane Winson, then Wendy Hatrick. The conditions for the run were incredibly tough.

The weather, coupled with the shorter distance of the run requiring a fast pace, was a tough combination. Andrew Grant, local boy Ian Simpson and John Pumford-Green showed great determination to power through the run to try to catch Lynsey. However, Lynsey coped with it the best, holding onto first place to take the victory.

The next event is planned to take place in Brae on the 24th August over a “sprint” distance of 500 metres swim, 20km cycle and a 5km run. For entry details or to volunteer to help on the day, please go to www.shetlandtriathlonclub.co.uk or just come along on the day to support the competitors.
