Come dancing

SHETLANDERS of all ages are being encouraged to emulate their popular TV favourites from the soon to start Strictly Come Dancing programme by attending free open nights organised by local dance clubs.

The Scalloway Dance Club, based in Scalloway Boating Club, will hold the first open night on Monday, 15th September, starting at 8pm.

The second event will be held in Islesburgh Community Centre by the Lerwick Dance Club on Wednesday, 17th September, also at 8pm.

At the open nights, club members will demonstrate ballroom dances such as the modern waltz, quickstep and foxtrot. There will also be demonstrations of a range of Latin American dances, including tango, rumba and cha-cha. Visitors will be encouraged to join in a couple of simple fun dances.

During the winter season both dance clubs arrange weekly training sessions for beginners and during the open nights. Members will provide details of how people can become involved in this increasingly popular activity, which also has the benefit of keeping folk fit.

Club instructor Diane Watt said: “Why not come along? You will be made most welcome and you could become the next Anton or Erin.”
