Mackerel landed

NORWEGIAN vessels have been dominating the scene at Lerwick Harbour.

Four fishing boats from Norway – Fiskebas SF, Fonnes, Haugagut and Havsnurp – arrived at Shetland Catch on Saturday, each carrying a load of mackerel.

A further six landings were made on Tuesday, all of which came from Norwegian boats.

In other news, the reefer Eiger berthed at the Greenhead base after sailing from St Petersburgh to pick up cargo.

She came in last Wednesday, following the departure of British reefer Green Concordia, and is not expected to leave until today.

Whitefish prices forced down

BUMPER landings at Peterhead have forced down prices for some of the smaller fish up here.

Over 5,000 fish fell under the hammer at the north east town’s fishmarket on Monday, followed by almost 6,000 the following day.

So great were their numbers organisers were forced to bring the old market out of retirement to use alongside the new one.

Naturally the high volumes of fish have been pushing prices down.

A spokesman for fish agent LHD said the high landings were having a knock-on effect on the prices of smaller fish in Shetland.

“It’s been quite poor for small whitings and haddocks. There were 120 boxes of fish that didn’t sell on Tuesday.”

Better quality fish, such as cod and monkfish, have been doing rather better, however.

Prices this week: cats £1.44-£1.88; cod £1.83-£3.17; haddock £0.35-£2.36; hake £1.00-£1.66; halibut £4.50-£8.17; John Dory £6.50-£8.85; lemons £1.20-£5.08; ling £1.15-£1.50; lythe £2.68-£3.12; megs £1.28-£4.70; monk £2.42-£3.67; plaice £0.35-£1.50; saithe £0.40-£1.02; skate £0.46-£1.43; squid £1.90-£4.48; turbot £5.00-£12.05; tusk £0.80-£0.90; whiting £0.25-£1.53; witches £0.94-£1.30
