Hockey players celebrate in style

THE SHETLAND Ladies Hockey Association players’ player of the year, receiving the Kathleen Grant trophy for 2008, was presented to Delting’s Yvonne Manson at the recent presentation evening in Islesburgh.

The evening saw the presentation of the season’s silverware and the draw of the raffle. Association president Jillian Copland was pleased to see the silverware distributed across a number of teams this season showing how all competitions are becoming more evenly fought, with every game being tough.

All teams were represented at the evening and an enjoyable night was had. Donna Murray, the Delting captain, collected the Shearer Shield, the Lizzie Polson and the Town Hall seven-a-side trophies.

Fiona Dally and Maggie Kay Irvine received the Rosebowl and seven-a-side league trophies for Whalsay. Morag Fox collected the Grutness Trophy on behalf of Spurs.

Jillian Copland received the Moulder Memorial on behalf of Delting Reds, while Kerri Moulder picked up the Moulder Memorial wooden spoon for Baker Tilly Ness.

Shelley Sandison collected the Mid Brae Inn Cup on behalf of the Juniors.

A spokeswoman said the association would like to thank everyone for their continued support throughout the 2008 season, players, coaches, umpires, photographers, and supporters and finally the committee for a lot of hard work that goes unrecognised.

She said: “Congratulations to all teams on another successful hockey season. Good luck to all the junior players going through Highland district selection. We wish them all the very best of luck. Having a number of players considered at such a level shows how much Shetland hockey is moving forward.”

Winners of the Association raffle: 1 Gwen Malcolmson; 2 Shane Jamieson; 3 Fiona Shearer. The spokeswoman thanked all who bought and sold raffle tickets and donated prizes as she said their support was invaluable.
