Lifeboat called out but no-one found

LERWICK lifeboat was called out on Wednesday morning after police received a report of a flare and a dinghy in difficulty off the Knab.

The alarm was raised at 11.50am by two calls from members of the public. Lifeboat and coastguard teams carried out a search of coastal areas from Lerwick harbour to the Sands of Sound and on the Bressay shoreline, and a small Y-boat was launched by the lifeboat, but no there was no sign of any boat or people.

Police carried out inquiries with residents of nearby areas but no-one could confirm that emergency services were required. Inquiries are also ongoing to trace the people making the initial calls. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lerwick police.
