Africa show at Vaila gallery

A NEW exhibition of paintings opens this weekend at Vaila Fine Art in Lerwick.

The Crossing of Paths features recent watercolours from West Africa by artist and teacher Peter Davis.

In 2006 Peter and his wife Linda set off on a two-year placement with Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) in Northern Ghana. During that time, as well as supporting and training teachers Peter also made many small paintings.

Colour is perhaps the element which sets this new work apart from the artist’s Shetland paintings. Vivid oranges, reds and browns contrast with greens and pinks in these small paintings from experiences of dramatic weather and hot walks to the cooler and calming times of dawn and dusk in a savannah landscape.

The Crossing of Paths, with a title taken from the writing of Nigerian-born Ben Okri, brings together a western landscape tradition with the colourful inspiration of West Africa.

The exhibition can be seen at Vaila Fine Art, 61 Commercial Street, Lerwick, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 11am to5pm through until the end of January 2009.
