Plenty of fish

A buoyant start to the new year at Lerwick fishmarket continued into the early part of the week as more than 2,500 boxes were landed on Friday and Monday, but landings have since declined with fewer boats venturing out to sea during the recent stormy weather.

Friday saw 1,420 boxes landed while a number of boats came in to shelter over the weekend leading to the market bristling with activity on Monday as a further 1,105 boxes were landed. A spokesman for agents LHD said prices for most species had been reasonably good, although the cod price had been lower than anticipated.

It was the first week that the extension to the fish market, which increases the capacity to roughly 1,500 boxes, had been used (see separate story).
