Fisherman suffered crushed finger

A crewman on the fishing boat Prolific was injured 100 miles north-east of Lerwick at the weekend when a piece of equipment crushed part of the index finger on his left hand.

The man was treated on board the vessel, which maintained a radio link with medical staff at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary who advised them to head to Lerwick and the Gilbert Bain Hospital.

The man’s wound was dressed and cleaned on the vessel before he received further treatment in Lerwick.

Meanwhile, a crewman from a French fishing boat was also taken to the Gilbert Bain for treatment after taking ill 140 miles north-east of Unst.

The vessel La Grande Hermine was met by harbour tug the Knab as she came to berth at Lerwick harbour just before midnight on Sunday. The man was later discharged from hospital.
