Follow Ertie’s lead and Get Fit With SRT

The Shetland Times and Shetland Recreational Trust are teaming up again to seek six members of the public willing to sign up for a six-month fitness programme, Get Fit With SRT.

The last time something similar was held one of the participants, Ertie Burgess, transformed his life, losing several stone and eventually competing in the New York marathon in October last year.

Under the new programme, designed by SRT health and fitness manager Diane Leyland, a personal development plan will be devised for each successful applicant, taking into consideration their level of fitness. As well as physical training, advice will be offered on diet, nutrition and general wellbeing.

Each participant will have their own fitness adviser, who will be responsible for assessing progress in relation to the development plan. The fitness programme will centre on gym workouts but may also include walking, running, cycling, swimming and studio classes.

Applicants are invited from around the isles, and training will be offered at Clickimin Leisure Complex, West Mainland Leisure Complex, North Mainland Leisure Complex or Whalsay Leisure Centre. The fitness advisors will be Jennifer Thomson, Marianne Hughson, Karen Craigie, David Leslie, Jake Williams and Janice Hamar.

We are looking for anyone over the age of 18 who demonstrates a desire to improve their fitness level and general wellbeing. We welcome applicants who have had ill health or who may have a physical condition which has deterred them in the past, and who want to start exercising but don’t know how. Special fitness programmes can be devised for those who fall into this category in conjunction with their doctor.

On completion of the “Get Fit” programme, SRT will offer a Platinum subscription worth £560 for one year to the person who has reached their target. If more than one person succeeds, a names will be drawn from a hat.

Those who are interested should fill in the form in this week’s Shetland Times and return it to Editorial, The Shetland Times, Gremista, Lerwick, ZE1 0PX. The closing date is Monday 23rd February. Each applicant must be willing to be photographed before they start and at the end of the six months for the paper and provide a detailed log for publication once a month.
