School pupils enjoy carpet bowls coaching

Bowling coaches Babs Mundie and Jean and John Jarmson have con-tinued to visit primary schools to introduce pupils to carpet bowls.

After the Christmas break John visited Skerries where he worked with all pupils, aged five to 14, in three groups. With Babs and Jean, he then went to Whalsay to work with pupils from primary seven.

On Tuesday the coaches spent their day going from Cunningsburgh to Sandwick and then on to Dunrossness. In each school they were given a warm welcome and went on to work with the children – all from primary seven classes.

John said the children were well behaved and very attentive. After some initial ends of simply rolling bowls, the pupils in each school enjoyed a brief game during which they saw how to keep score, how to measure for shot and some ele-mentary tactics. The children all said they enjoyed the visit. On Wednesday, the coaches were in Sandness and Tingwall primaries and were visititing Hamnavoe yesterday.

John said he was extremely grateful to Clickimin Centre assistant manager Robbie Leask and staff for allowing him to borrow carpets and bowls for use in schools which did not have access to these items. Without that support quite a few schools would not be able to afford their pupils the opportunity to experience playing carpet bowls.
