Schools closed again as cold weather persists

The snowy weather caused more disruption on Wednesday with almost all county schools closed and flights out of Sumburgh affected by short delays.

The Brae, Aith, Baltasound, Mid Yell, Burravoe, Cullivoe, Fetlar, Foula, Hamnavoe, Happy Hansel, Cunningsburgh, Mossbank, North Roe, Ollaberry, Sandness, Skeld, Urafirth, Uyeasound, Whiteness and Dunrossness were all shut.

At Sumburgh airport flights operated as normal, although there were some delays because the airport did not open until 8.45am due to having to clear snow from the runways.

The police said, however, that things were “surprisingly quiet” considering the conditions as no road incidents had been reported.

Meanwhile Orkney Islands Council is to supply Shetland with more salt for the roads, with a consignment being sent up on Thursday night’s ferry.
