Poor weather boosts fish landings

There was a very busy start to the week at the fish markets this week as poor weather at the weekend boosted landings.

After Monday it was reasonably quiet. An LHD spokesman put this down to a combination of boats’ restricted days at sea and having to go further afield to get their catch, meaning that fewer boats may be landing at Lerwick as a result.

Fish prices have been lower, with megrims in particular fetching poor prices. Haddock, monkfish and whiting have fetched decent prices though.

The end of the week was also expected to be quiet, the spokesman said.

Whitefish prices: catfish £1.30-£1.86; cod £0.80-£2.17; dogfish £1.15-£2; haddock £0.40-£2.25; hake £1.10-£2.90; halibut £6-£9.17; lemon sole £1.10-£1.54; ling £0.80-£1.54; lythe £1.83-£3.05; megrims £0.50-£4.22; monkfish £2-£4.80; plaice £0.45-£1.77; reds £1.03-£5; saithe £0.48-£1.03; skate £1.12-£1.88; squid £1.60-£3.73; turbot £5.10-£13; whiting £0.30-£1.70; witches: £0.50-£1.62.
