Cattle Herd Book Society nearly 100

The Shetland Cattle Herd Book Society, instituted on 28th October 1910, is now approaching its 100th year and various remembrances are afoot.

One of the most fitting tributes to commemorate the dedication of both past and present breeders is the launch of a dedicated website at www.schbs.co.uk

Society president Addie Doull said the new website was a worthy memorial for the appreciation of Shetland’s living heritage and those who strove, against all the odds, to preserve it for posterity.

He said: “With its lavish illustrations we hope not only to highlight the infinite and unique assets of this wonderful breed, an animal which alone was responsible for the continued existence of the Shetland race in the dark days, but also to draw attention to the diverse and spectacular environment in which this hardy breed developed.

“This unique combination made Shetland and the Shetlanders what they are today, a distinct people possessing a strong sense of community, along with an historic pride in their ancestry and cultural heritage which they aspired to preserve through the roller-coaster fortunes of these islands since time immemorial.

“We hope that the essence of this message is captured in the website, thus inspiring many more adventurers to sample our unique islands, appreciate their heritage and even consider the possibility of becoming owners themselves.”

Mr Doull said the society was grateful to Origin Art for its diligence in completing the website project, as contracted, for launch at the society’s annual general meeting.
