High scores as hockey season starts

Monday saw the start of the outdoor hockey league and a total of 10 goals being scored in the first two games of the Association Rosebowl.

Association Rosebowl Double League

Delting 4, Scalloway 0

The first match of the season got under way in ideal conditions and proved to be very exciting, with both teams fielding some familiar and some new faces.

Delting started strongly and within only a few minutes of play a crossed ball into the circle found Megan Hibbert waiting at the far post to first time it past Christine Georgeson in the Scalloway goal.

Michelle Stark made some telling runs for Delting and combined well with Linda Gunn and Julie Kirkness to pressurise the Scalloway defence of Kerri Redfern, Cindy Pottinger and Lauren Anderson.

Scalloway settled more towards the end of the first half with some strong attacks down the left side from Nicola Smith. They fought hard to get the ball into the Delting circle towards Ann Marie Robinson who was waiting to deliver a telling strike. However, Rhiannon Inkster, Jillian Copland and Jill Hibbert dealt well with their attempts.

Delting’s second goal came after Julie Kirkness struck the ball towards goal and Brenda Leask pounced on the rebound, giving the keeper no chance.

In the second half Scalloway pressed forward with some good passing from Kate Moncrieff and Naomi Johnson and they started to look more composed, forcing a penalty corner. However, Delting broke out and Kerri Redfern commanded the defence well for Scalloway. Delting were awarded several penalty corners but were unable to convert as the Scalloway defence held strong.

Brenda Leask gained two further goals during the remainder of the second half for her hat trick.

Julie Brown of Scalloway had a good start to the season when she came on as a substitute in defence.

Players of the match were Julie Kirkness for Delting and Naomi Johnson for Scalloway.

Zetland 0, Whalsay 6

Zetland held Whalsay for the opening 15 minutes but once they settled into a rhythm they were totally dominant.

Angelina Jamieson opened the scoring when she pounced on a rebound off the Zetland keeper’s pads. She caused the Zetland defence all kinds of problems and scored again following an initial fabulous save by Debi Kane, off the chest.

Zetland showed determination and the trio of Stacey Gardner, Alison Bain and Shona Keith probed into the Whalsay end but Maree Simpson and Maggie Irvine held the Whalsay defence secure. The half ended with a penalty corner in which Angelina got her hat trick.

Zetland made some changes and brought on new signings Suzanne Manson and Kara Thompson. Both played hard with Suzanne making some strong challenges. However, Zetland just couldn’t break through the Whalsay defence.

Whalsay’s Zoe Irvine had a great run from deep in her own half. She switched the ball to the left and Duffie squeezed it past the keeper for the fourth. The Zetland keeper was injured by a lifted shot and shortly afterwards Angelina found the backboard once more, again pouncing on a rebound. She was lethal at close range.

As the game came to a close Zoe Irvine was rewarded with another goal.

Best on the night were Angelina Jamieson for her lethal finishing and Dawn Anderson for her determined performance in the Zetland defence.
