‘Green heroes’

Two resourceful Shetlanders were this week named as “Green Heroes” in the Scottish Green List of 50 people who have made a difference to the environment.

Fair Isle man Barry Sinclair, an engineer, came in at number 29 for his work setting up the world’s first community-run, standalone, wind-turbine project. Mr Sinclair, as chairman of the Fair Isle Electricity Council, was also the man responsible for keeping the engines running when it opened in 1982. Electricity charges went down from 13p to 4p per kilowatt hour.

Ross Gazey from Unst reached number 39 on the Green List for his work on hydrogen for the Pure Shetland project, demonstrating the power of hydrogen technology which could bring much-needed development to Unst.
