Anderson retains trophy as golf season gets into full swing

The new golf season is now in full swing at Dale with the first open competition being held on Saturday.

Whalsay’s Stuart Anderson retained the Jotun Open scratch trophy on a blustery day with Steven Goodlad winning the handicap trophy.

The players were fortunate to miss the squally rain showers of the morning although a strong southerly wind and a wet course made scoring conditions tough.

Anderson made the best of the conditions and was first in the scratch section with a score of 74 to retain the trophy he won last year. Michael Boxwell was second with 76 and Graeme Sandison made a timely return to fitness to finish third on 78.

The handicap section was very close with Steven Goodlad winning his first ever trophy, his score of 95 (net 69) enough to take first place. Four players had scores of net 71 but Magnus Leask (79) had the best back nine to take second place from Marc Henry (83), Ian Leask (83) and George Fraser (91) in fifth place.

The Schlumberger Doubles trophy was won by the pairing of Rab Duffin and Scott Standring on a total of 78 stableford points with both players returning 39 points. Colin Morrison had the best individual score of the day with 40 points.

The April Medal was won by Ian Scott with a fine score of 71 (net 64), just pipping Jordan Leask who also had a good round of 70 (net 65). Scott Standring took third place with a score of 85 (net 66).

Derek Nicolson won the Tootsie Thomson Shield with an excellent score of 45 stableford points. Clive Watt took second place with 41 points and Crawford McIntyre was third on 39 points.

The first Wednesday night summer league sweepstake of the year was won by Clive Watt with 38 stableford points. Watt had played early in the day, avoiding the heavy rain and won comfortably by three points from Stewart Tomlinson (35) and Andy Glen (32).
