Women’s pairs narrowly lose in bowls but singles go well

Shetland’s bowlers have continued to perform well in the inter-island competition in the Isle of Wight, particularly in the singles.

Play started on Tuesday with the pairs team of Anne Robertson and June Bain struggling to overcome a 10-shot advantage gained by their Guernsey opponents over the first eight ends.

The Shetland pair rallied and finished very strongly, gaining 11 shots in the last four ends, but eventually lost by only one shot 21-20.

In Tuesday’s women’s singles match Rosie Jamieson beat Orkney’s Freda Swanney 21-10.

In Wednesday morning’s singles Shetland had two good wins against Ynys Mon, Rosie winning 21-6 while her husband Graham’s score was 21-10.

In the afternoon the Shetland men’s pairs team Alex Elphinstone and Ally Bain were ahead against Orkney, while on Wednesday evening the men’s fours were due to meet the Western Isles while the women’s fours faced Guernsey.
