Court appearance for man accused of pouring petrol over himself

A man accused of pouring petrol over himself during a struggle with his partner at their home in Lerwick appeared in court on Friday.

Brian Smith, 46, of Burnside, is charged with carrying out the act before struggling with the woman as she tried to wrestle the can and a lighter from his hands, during which time she also got splashed with petrol.

He is also accused of destroying a table, chairs, fridge and TV during the incident, which took place on 18th September.

Appearing before Honorary Sheriff Arnold Duncan, his case was continued without plea until 18th November.

He was released on bail.
