Sheriff alters offender’s tagging order so he can get … free chips

A man had his curfew hours changed so he could go to the chip shop at night. Martin McLean, 35, of Pitt Lane, Lerwick, was given a half hour window to visit a takeaway during the evenings.

He had been given a tag after breaking into hotel rooms in Lerwick. However he found himself in the dock again on Wednesday after being caught breaching the restriction order.

Defence agent Tommy Allan said McLean had been visiting the chip shop just before its closing time to get free chips.

“Does he want me to suspend it for half an hour for the chip shop to close?” asked Sheriff Graeme Napier.

Mr Allan said he had explained to his client “the complications” it caused when he breached his restriction of liberty order.

Sheriff Napier agreed to give McLean “a half hour off either side of 11 o’clock”. A new restriction of liberty order will now run from 7pm to 10.45pm, and pick up again from 11.15pm to 6am the following morning.
