Good sailing order of day at Baltasound

Among all the festivities in Unst, the Baltasound regatta was sailed last Saturday in a strong force 5-6 southerly wind. A course within the voe involved tacking from pier to Ordale and from Hamar to Skeotaing three times around the figure of eight course.

Only the dinghies sailed in the morning, the maid men deciding conditions were too rough.

The morning races proved a triumph for the Yell Albacore Flamingo, skippered by Graham Hughson, which beat Storm (Steven Brown) to win both the Inkster Memorial Cup and the Sapphire Trophy. Moondancer (David Thomson) was third in both races.

Steven got his revenge in the afternoon, winning the Baltasound Dinghy Cup with Flamingo second and Blue Mist (Douglas Leask) third. The maids joined the fleet in the afternoon and in a shortened race for the Hamarer Trophy, Aquaholic (Peter Hunter) was first and Tek-Sing (Mark Arthur) was second.

A short course was again sailed for the Laurence Liddle Trophy, which was won by Armeria (Ian Irvine). Second was Tek-Sing, four seconds ahead of Aquaholic.

Several capsizes occurred during the day which kept the rescue boats busy, but the wind remained steady throughout and the weather remained dry. The day concluded with a well attended concert and dance in the Reading Room. Unst Boating Club would like to thank everybody that made the 2010 Baltasound Regatta a success.
