Main road blocked by car crash outside petrol station

The crash blocked the main road north out of the town.

The main road north out of Lerwick was blocked late this afternoon after a two-car crash near Leask’s Garage and fuel station. There were no serious injuries in the accident although one of the drivers was taken to hospital by ambulance. The other, Brenda Leask of Weisdale, was unhurt.

Meanwhile, police carried out “pro-active” speed checks on motorists around Shetland today, with particular emphasis being placed around schools which went back following the festive break.

A 21-year-old man was recorded travelling at 50mph in the 30mph zone near Tingwall Hall shortly before the 20mph restriction came into effect.

Additionally a 39-year-old woman was caught driving at 48mph in the 20mph zone outside Whiteness Primary School.

Both drivers will be reported to the procurator fiscal.

Acting inspector Bruce Gray said Shetland police are concerned and disappointed that drivers continue to speed, particularly around schools.
