Drug order man back behind bars after alleged breach

A drug user is back behind bars after allegedly breaching his bail a day after being released from custody.

Matthew Smith, 25, of Grodians, Lerwick, is accused of stealing a bottle of shampoo from Tesco on 24th February.

His case was continued without plea at Lerwick Sheriff Court today until 7th March.

However procurator fiscal Kathryn Gordon opposed bail. Smith, she said, had five deferred sentences hanging over him and was at a “high risk” of re-offending.

Smith was only released from custody last week when he agreed to undertake a drug treatment and testing order (DTTO) after causing a disturbance at a house in Lerwick’s Millgaet.

Honorary Sheriff Malcolm Bell said the latest charge “relatively minor” but he could not ignore Smith’s previous record.
