HAYFIELD ESTATE PEATS

LADIES DRIVE: Peat Constable: Mr Bob Leask, D.S.M.,

DALE: Peat Constable: Mr Andrew Polson.

THOSE who wish to keep their last year’s banks must mark each end with their name by the 3rd May, after which all unmarked banks may be relet to other persons. Banks cannot be considered confirmed unless a numbered receipt has been received from the Peat Constable against payment. In any case, payment must be made before cutting. Peats not removed from the banks by 31st October may revert to the Estate and be lifted without further notice, or the offender may be required to move them at his expense. Anything found in the peat is the property of the Estate: rewards may be given. Feals must be laid back properly, turf upwards, and banks properly drained; copies of regulations for peat cutting can be seen at the Estate Office or on application to the Clerks to the Scattald Committees or the Peat Constables. Copies will also be posted under the Brig o’ Fitch and on the Peat Constables Hut in the Lady’s Drive. Failure to comply with these regulations for proper management of banks is an offence under the Crofters (Scotland) Act, 1955, and offenders can be fined 40/-, plus 5/- every day the offence continues. Owing to the new rating system which comes into force in 1961 occupiers of banks will be required to pay rates of 2/6 per bank. Crofters and turbaries (that is, those with a statutory or life right to cut peats) do not pay rates on their banks. Those who wish to become turbaries can obtain application forms from this office or from the Peat Constables. Reduced rates for regular cutters.
