Great news for Shetland (Theo Nicolson)

We all welcome the good news that BP and others are investing £4.5 billion in expanding oil production at the Clair field west of Shetland. The increased production will pass through the pipeline into Sullom Voe for three to four decades.

Hopefully, Shetland Islands Council will now be discussing new contracts with BP for tug cover at Sullom Voe. In particular what the industry requires maintaining the safety standards to safeguard our environment and BP’s reputation.

The tug crews have provided safe transit of ships in and out of Sullom Voe for the past three decades. In thinking ahead, our council should now be training young people to be in the position to crew and provide safe tug provision for as long as Sullom Voe exists.
