Future of lighthouse at Eshaness secured

The Northern Lighthouse Board has confirmed the retention of the Eshaness lighthouse following a review of its various lights.Shetland Islands Council had made pleas for the lighthouse to be maintained, with harbour board chairman Robert Henderson warning against leaving the dangerous, “very rugged” coast without an important navigational aid.

In a short statement on Thursday afternoon, the board stated: “Recent consultation has taken place over the requirement for Eshaness lighthouse into the future.

“The board have been particularly pleased with the level of responses received during this process and the feedback strongly indicated there was still a need for the continued operation of the lighthouse. At its navigation committee meeting held [today] the decision was taken to retain the Eshaness lighthouse.”
