Whalsay secure last spot in Madrid Cup semi-finals

Whalsay secured their place in the semi-finals of senior football’s Madrid Cup competition by defeating Delting 2-0 last night. Goals came from Bryan Irvine and former Unst and Thistle player David Thomson, the Bonnie Isle team’s latest signing, as they join Lerwick sides Celtic, Spurs and Thistle in the last four.

Delting’s chance of making it to the knockout stages had all but disappeared on Friday night when the former Shetland champions were hammered 9-1 by Whitedale. County full back Piotr Drozdowski grabbed a hat trick for the West Siders with Lorne McNiven and Richard Sinclair each bagging two and Jordan Morrison and Allan Johnston also getting on the scoresheet. Callum Clarke registered Delting’s consolation.

In the G&S Flooring Premier League Spurs, who have perhaps been unfairly tagged favourites for the competition, defeated Scalloway 5-0. The prolific Connel Gresham got a hat trick with Jordan Webb and Shane Jamieson also scoring.

It was a good weekend for the milkbags as their second string won the Reserve League Cup final against Thistle on Saturday afternoon. Spurs B led 1-0 at the break after a stunning free kick from Stuart Hall and after half time the introduction of Scott Morrison made all the difference, with the regular first-teamer adding another three. Thistle substitute Liam Evans got his team’s goal.
