New home for fiddle contest

Next year’s Shetland Young Fiddler of the Year competition will be held in Mareel.

The event is being organised by Valerie Watt and Vaila Grant on behalf of the Shetland Folk Society. They have announced that the judges will be Maurice Henderson, Claire White and Peter Gear.

Mrs Watt said: “I think a lot of the young fiddlers will be looking forward to the opportunity to play in the new venue – it will be a very memorable experience for them.”

Shetland Arts marketing officer Lisa Ward said: “We areabsolutely delighted that Valerie and Vaila, on behalf of the Shetland Folk Society, have chosen to host the Young Fiddler of the Year 2013 in Mareel.

“Mareel’s main auditorium is designed with great acoustics in mind, and it will be a real pleasure to hear the young fiddlers playing in that space.

“There’s always a huge breadth of talent in the competition and it will be an honour to welcome all the players, judges, and family and friends to Mareel in the spring of the year.”

The competition and performances will be on on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th April.
