Reader on top form at Mareel

Eddi Reader and the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra were an effective combination last night, in what proved to be a popular JAWS festival event.

The concert in Mareel came as part of the orchestra’s twentieth anniversary celebrations, which are being marked with a tour of island communities.

Alba: Songs of Scotland gave Reader the chance to perform in Gaelic, with a well-known song An Ataireaclhd Ard. The well known singer and song-writer also reflected on the work of poet Edwin Morgan in Glen of Tranquility, and performed the lilting Loch Tay Boat song.

There was a good turn-out for the evening, and Reader is performing again this evening.

• See next week’s Shetland Times for full review of Reader’s performance.
