Fiddle sensation Jodie proves impressive

Meet musical sensation Jodie Smith, the talented youngster who has been named Shetland’s Young Fiddler of the Year 2016.

Last night marked a double success for the 13 year-old from Bigton.

The pupil from Sandwick Junior High School wowed crowds at Mareel with a trio of tunes – the Cello Brig, Pottinger’s Pineapple Polka and Gear-ed Up.

But Jodie, who has been playing fiddle since she was just six years old, was also named winner in the traditional section.

Mum Marina said she was delighted with Jodie’s impressive achievement – particularly as all the contenders performed to such a high standard.

“They all played very well,” she said. “It was a hard job for the judges to choose, and Jodie is absolutely delighted.

“We’re very grateful to everybody who puts in the time and effort for it.”
