Celtic and Spurs make it to Madrid Cup final

The final of senior football’s Madrid Cup will be an all-town affair this year, with Celtic and Spurs winning their respective semi-finals against Whalsay and Thistle last night.

Celtic needed extra time to clinch victory over the Bonnie Isle side, with goals in a thrilling 4-3 game coming from Connor Regan, James Aitken, Lowrie Simpson and Robert Smith. Replying for Whalsay were Karl Williamson, Martyn Stevenson and James Shearer.

The match between town rivals Spurs and Thistle was somewhat less hotly contested, with the cup holders gaining a 4-0 win with goals from Paul Molloy (2), James Johnston and an own goal.

Meanwhile in Friday’s G&S Flooring Premier League matches Celtic and Spurs were also victorious.

The hoops defeated Scalloway 4-1 with goals from Robert Smith (2), James Aitken and Neil Fenwick. A Scott Henderson penalty was scant consolation for the village side.

Spurs saw off Thistle in a dress-rehearsal for Monday’s semi-final but the match was much closer. Calvin Leask netted twice for the jags but Shane Jamieson, an own goal and
Iain Goodlad gave Spurs a vital 3-2 win over their rivals.

The other two league matches saw victories for Whalsay and Whitedale. The former beat Delting 3-1 with goals from John Hamilton, Bryan Irvine and Allister Johnson. Delting’s goal came from a Leighton Flaws penalty. Whitedale’s scorers in a 3-0 win over Ness were Piotr Drozdowski and Lorne McNiven (2).
