Drink driver fined £500 and banned for three years

A driver who took to the wheel while over the drink driving limit has been banned for three years and fined £500.

Chee Wee Leong, 45, of Upper Richmond Road, West London, was caught driving without a licence with 57 microgrammes of alcohol in his system – the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Today Lerwick Sheriff Court heard Leong had been in the pub when he received a phone call telling him his mother in Malaysia was very ill in hospital.

He was upset by the news and decided to drive back to where he was staying.

Police stopped him after becoming concerned by the manner of his driving.

Defence agent Tommy Allan said Leong was due to be detained by the UK Border Agency, and was likely to be deported.

Sheriff Philip Mann fined Leong for the drink driving charge, but he admonished him on the driving while unlicenced charge.

He also refused a motion by the Crown to seize the car, after Mr Allan argued it was owned by someone who was outwith the country.
