A hard choice, but JR White window wins out
For the past few weeks Lerwick’s streets have been brightened up by the annual Up-Helly-A’ window display competition.
Jarl Stephen Mouat and his wife Morag judged the competition this year and chose JR White as the winners.
The window display depicted a typical Up-Helly-A’ scene with a series of guizers in fancy dress holding torches. There was also a guizer from the Jarl’s squad resplendent in purple and silver, which belongs to shop director Jenny Arthur’s father Lewie Pottinger, who was a member of the Jarl’s squad in 1995 under Peter Leask.
The rest of the costumes were made up from the shop’s stock. The torches were supplied by the Up-Helly-A’ committee and former Jarl Ronnie Gair supplied the programmes featured in the display. Jarl Mouat said: “We chose it because they used their own mannequins and materials for the display and visually it was good. It was between three windows really and it was a difficult decision.”
JR White manager Graeme Halcrow and Mrs Arthur were presented with the trophy by Mr and Mrs Mouat.
Mrs Arthur said: “We’re delighted to win, our floor manager Graeme Halcrow put in a lot of effort and we’re very keen to support Up-Helly-A’.”
