New man at helm

Whalsay man Alexander Simpson has been appointed deputy harbourmaster at Lerwick Port Authority.

Capt Simpson, 27, began his seagoing career with Clyde Marine and sponsoring company Great White Fleet in 1999.

After qualifying as a deck officer, he quickly rose through the ranks and was also the first person in Scotland to gain Merchant Vessels Operations VQ level 4 qualifications.

In 2008, he qualified as a master mariner and became a captain on container vessels trading worldwide, working with DSM which manages vessels for Danish firms NYK Lauritsen Cool and Maersk.

Capt Simpson succeeds Calum Grains who was previously promoted to harbourmaster.
