Oil worker dies after fall





An oil worker has died after falling from a North Sea platform into the sea, 95 miles south-east of Sumburgh in the early hours of today.

The incident, which is being treated as a work-related death, hap­pened on the Taqa Harding platform at approximately 3am.

The 62-year-old man was airlifted to Lerwick and rushed to the Gilbert Bain Hospital for treatment, but he subsequently died.

A joint investigation was laun­ched involving Police Scotland and the Health and Safety Executive, under the direction of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal service, to determine the full circum­stances.

Taqa is trying to establish the cause behind the incident. More than 100 people are believed to be on board the platform. All other personnel are understood to be accounted for.
