Police investigate claims moorings were cut

Police are investigating if the moorings of a fishing boat were deliberately cut after the vessel was found on a beach near Collafirth Pier where she was berthed.

A spokesman for Shetland Coastguard said they received a call shortly after 8am to say the Kestrel had come aground on a beach close to the pier, with a claim that her ropes had been cut.

The owner of the 45-foot vessel, along with six coastguards, was at the scene to see how it could be freed.

It is understood locals helped to return her to the pier. Divers were this afternoon due to carry out checks to assess any damage.

Shetland police chief Angus MacInnes this afternoon confirmed officers were investigating allegations the moorings had been cut.
