Quality is the key (Geoff McCarron)
I cannot agree with the reasons put forward for the difficulty in the local dairy's efforts to attract more customers to buy their milk as stated in last week's Shetland Times.
Yes, the big supermarkets have huge buying power, and can massively discount milk without a blink, but, because their milk is filtered, it lasts way longer than the local stuff which seems to go off alarmingly quickly.
This to me is the real reason, as it seems a problem that not only has myself encountered, but to all those people that I have spoken to on this problem.
I will buy local produce first, and be happy to pay more, but you have to have the quality there. I won't buy local milk which I myself have to pour down the sink a day after it has been opened and kept in the fridge. Solve this issue then see a bigger uptake.
